This day in Minnesota Sports history (1997)

On this day in 1997 the Minnesota Twins retired the jersey #34, most notable worn by Kirby Puckett from 1984 to 1995.

Puckett retired in 1995 after getting hit in the eye with a pitch. As doctors began looking at the eye it was discovered that Puckett was also dealing with Glaucoma which would affect his vision and ultimately force him out of the game at the age of 35.

Kirby finished his career with 2,304 hits, 207 home runs and a career batting average of .318. He was a 10-time all-star, 6-time gold glove winner and 6-time silver slugger winner. Puckett was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in 2001.
