University of St. Thomas to "Involuntarily" Leave MIAC After Ruling

The MIAC announced Wednesday that St. Thomas will be "involuntarily removed" from the MIAC after being a member of the conference since it's inception in 1920.

The ruling comes after "athletic competitive parity" became raised as a concern earlier this year. The process of removing St. Thomas from MIAC competitive activities will be a multi-year process that will see the school fully removed by Spring of 2021.

According to reports, the conference needed 9 of the 13 member schools to vote in favor of removal and all schools other than St. Thomas, St. Johns, St. Benedicts and Bethel voted for removal.

St. Thomas boasts the largest enrollment of all MIAC schools, about twice the size of the next closest school. That enrollment, coupled with athletic dominance in recent conference history has moved for Presidents of other MIAC schools to begin holding conversations behind closed doors and declining any public comments on the matter.

It is unclear at this point if the conference will seek to replace St. Thomas in the conference
