The 'Playoff Machine' tells us the percent chance the Vikings make playoffs

As it stands right now, if the season ended today the Minnesota Vikings would be in the playoffs as the #6 seed in the NFC. That's Wild Card weekend and on the road for our favorite team. But the season doesn't end today and the Vikings have a couple of tough games on their docket the rest of the way.

Just curious to take the temperature of the fan base as of this morning I put up a poll on the KFAN social accounts asking how the fans feel about the teams playoff chances.

Here's how that stands right now:

That's one opinion there, but the kind folks over at FiveThirtyEight.com actually did the math and computed the Vikings playoff chances given a bunch of different scenarios.

Right now, standing at 6-5-1, the Vikings have a 60% chance to make the playoffs, a 20% chance to win the division and a 2% chance to win the Super Bowl.

Here's where it gets interesting, if the Vikings win on Monday at Seattle that jumps up to an 85% chance to make the playoffs. A loss drops that number to 43%.

A win against Miami and Detroit (which are assumed, but far from a sure thing) will put the Vikings with a greater than 99% chance to make the playoffs.

It's kind of a fun experiment to lay out the results of the other teams, pick results for the Vikings and see how it impacts the teams playoff changes. CLICK HERE to run your own scenarios and waste your afternoon at work.
